Most of us Indians have been taught in the schools that Mahatma Gandhi is called as Father of the Nation. Little did we, however, know that it is no more than a fake title that has never actually been conferred to Mahatma Gandhi. This fact has been revealed as an answer to a RTI filed by a 10 years old girl from Lucknow.

mahatma gandhi is not father of the nation

Mahatma Gandhi Is NOT a Father of The Nation [RTI Confirmed]

The girl named Aishwarya Parashar, student of Class 6 got curious while she was studying class 5 social studies text book which had a lesson that mentioned Mahatma Gandhi as the Father of the Nation.

She, however, tried to find the date and time when this title was actually conferred to Gandhi but could not find it anywhere. She asked her teachers as well as parents. Both of whom claimed to be ignorant of the fact. She even tried to search in on web but again her query remain unanswered. This is what Aishwarya had to say on this;

“I was reading my Class 5 social studies textbook which had a lesson about Mahatma Gandhi. It said that Mahatma Gandhi is referred to as Father of the Nation. So, a question came to my mind regarding the year when he was conferred with this title. There was nothing mentioned in my book. So, I asked my teachers, they had no clue. Then, I asked my parents, they did not know either. I could not find the information on Google so my parents suggested that I file a Right to Information (RTI) to the Prime Minister’s Office,”

It is then, her parents advised her to file the RTI with Govt. of India to know the facts and to get the documentary evidence on Mahatma Gandhi being Father of the Nation and the date when he got this title.

PMO and Govt. of India Failed to Prove Gandhi as Father of the Nation

She filed the RTI with PMO during February last year who in turn forwarded it to MHA and then it finally reached National Archives. Quite interestingly, none of them had the answer to the query of the little girl. They replied back that they don’t seem to have any documentary evidence that says that Mahatma Gandhi was indeed a Father of the Nation and that when, how and who had given this title to him.

Below is what Aishwarya told about getting a reply to her RTI;

“When I sent my query to the Prime Minister’s Office, they sent a reply saying that they had no specific information on the issue. Then my RTI was forwarded to the home ministry and they had no answer so then it was forwarded to National Arch-ives and they, too, did not have any information. The-y told me that if I want to research on this subject, then I can go there and conduct my research,” she said. The National Arch-ives did not have records. “My query still remains unanswered.

Father of the Nation is an Unofficial Title given to Gandhi

The deputy Prime Minister of India in 2004, L. K Advani had once mentioned;

“I may clarify that although Mahatma Gandhi is popularly known as “Father of the Nation,” no such title was ever formally conferred on him by the government.”

It is however clear that it is not official that Mahatma Gandhi has a Father of the Nation title. Gandhi seems to have got it only because few people unofficially tried to call him as father of the nation on some of their public speeches. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who in his address on Singapore Radio on July 6, 1944 has addressed Mahatma Gandhi as Father of the Nation. Thereafter on April 28, 1947 Gandhi was referred with the same title by Sarojini Naidu at a conference.

Kudos to the little girl Aishwarya and her IQ that she came up with this query which no one else has ever raised a question about. Even though, millions of Indians have been reading about this in their school curriculum without fail.

So, good thing is now people will be getting to know the real side of Mahatma Gandhi and other such leader who had little or no contribution to this country but have got all the fame and accolades.
