Sachin Tendulkar is one the most bankable celebrity icons in India. Or rather I should say the most bankable! His bank balance is a testimony of that, now before any of you brand me jealous, I am his fan too guys. I am aware he is worshipped as a demi-god in India due to his cricketing abilities.
Recently though, What has got me and the rest of our 1.2 billion plus huge population thinking, is – has he done the right thing by accepting to join the Rajya Sabha i.e government? We are all aware what a muddy place politics is and how much mud it can splash on icons we ‘used’ to worship.
Is the ruling congress party just using this icon who has a clean image and reputation to wash some of its own dirty image which has taken a hammering due to the recent CWG, 2G and numerous other scams? Is he just being used like Manmohan Singh who we all know is a clean government servant to show a honest face to the people of India? Because we all know he is a dummy Prime minister, while the real power lies with Sonia Gandhi.
Or to think the other way, lets just assume for a minute that Sachin Tendulkar actually has some interest in serving the people, that brings up the question as to how is he going to do that? Usually social service starts from the grass roots and has its main stay there as it is required the most at the grass roots, not in the leafy lanes and plush surrounds of Sansad Bhavan! Hence it is quite curious and a mystery as to how does his candidature or any other celebrity candidature is valid in the first place. Probably because India is a nation of hero-worshipping naive people who have not been able to stand up for themselves since Mahatma Gandhi left us. Hence we are sceptical of any initiative taken by people like Anna Hazare, while we do not tire speculating over a non-issue like what is the name of Aishwarya Rai`s baby! For gods-sake can India mature at last?
Why can`t we hero-worship people who have actually done something for the society and not just played cricket or acted in a few movies? While more than half of India still lives in worst than third world conditions, when will we actually think about issues that actually matter? Like population control, hygiene, human rights violation, work rights at the work place. Because Sachin Tendulkar has all of these facilities and a lot more but does he feel for these issues?
Lets be politically incorrect and morally correct for a change! If the people of India desire to be a superpower like America then we have clean this rotten political system else even a GDP(Gross domestic Product) growth of 20% per annum will not guarantee clean running water and non-stop electricity for us! Forget about social security for the unemployed and elderly!
Well it is my personal request to Sachin Tendulkar, you have got the highest level of affection and respect not to speak of financial well-being due to the love of the Indian people, do you think its time to payback at least 10 % of that?
