Air Force One isn’t technically a plane, but a mere name given to any craft in which the President of the US is moving. Air Force One as it is referred avoids the confusion with any other planes in the area.

Two of these customized Boeing 747-200B jets regularly flies under the designation of Air Force One, which looks very identical.

Wherever it flies, it leaves behind the most recognizable symbols of the presidency. The American flag, plane emblazoned with the words ‘United States of America’ and the Seal of the President of the United States makes it easily recognized and unique.

A part of the White House Military Office, named as the Presidential Airlift Group maintains and operates the Air Force One.

Extensive and impressive on board electronics features almost 85 on-board telephones, a collection of two-way radios, fax machines and computer connections. Not only this, it also has 19 televisions and assorted office equipment.

It is a military aircraft, designed to withstand an air attack. The plane it also fitted with electronic countermeasures (ECM) to jam enemy radar.

Off limits to many is this plane. Some of the visiting politicians and journalists are not even allowed in some part of the plane to maintain the security.

Voice Control and Cruise Control options are also there which also functions like a satellite in space. This is done to keep the president safe at all times even against satellite tracking.

When Air Force One flies, several other cargo planes fly ahead of it to provide the President with the services he needs in remote areas.

‘Air Force One’ call sign was created majorly after an incident that took place in 1953 during which a Lockheed Constellation carrying President Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the airspace as a commercial flight using the same call sign. Hence a unique name was invented.

Since late 1950, lot many aircraft types have been used as Air Force One and it is looking into replacing the two VC-25 Aircraft with three replacement aircraft beginning in 2017.

Truman had signed the National Security Act of 1947 into law, which became the first plane to be designated as the Air Force One.

The 747 Boeing can be refueled in mid air and hence, is able to stay sky borne without landing for quite a long time.

Air Force One is stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Every time the President travels, a helicopter is used to bring the president from the White House to the Andrews.

The President and advisors can get in touch even when flying at 15,000 meters with anyone in the world. Isn’t that great?

In 1990, the old 707 aircraft was replaced by the 747 and is in use till today.
